World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth: Roxane Farmanfarmaian - The Middle East Labyrinth: Challenges and Prospects
Rosewood Crescent Hotel
400 Crescent Ct.
Dallas, TX 75201

Ticket Price: $20 - $35
Turmoil is sweeping the Middle East, with wide-ranging impacts on both the domestic and geo-political fronts. The Arab Spring has eclipsed the War on Terror. Restive populations are demanding democracy and dignity through constitutional change in Egypt and Tunisia. Meanwhile, neighboring governments are clamping down on citizen’s rights, with real prospects of civil war in Libya and Syria. A new geo-political map is emerging as the region faces fundamental and unpredictable adjustments. Local alliances are shifting, Turkey’s star is rising, and a fractious Iran with nuclear ambitions, is pitting the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) against the West. US relations with the region – as indeed China’s – will shift dramatically as political risk and energy needs re-balance both economic and military commitments. For powers inside and outside the region, security investment will continue to grow, though it is the viability of the Middle East’s political landscape that will determine whether it can deliver on the hopes of its youth and engage in the global market.
