On November 29, 2012 the World Affairs Council and Centro Fox will present the fourth of six “State of the World” addresses in Fort Worth and will feature the Honorable Olusegun Obasanjo. Oluṣẹgun Ọbasanjọ is a former Nigerian army general and former president of Nigeria. A Nigerian of Yoruba descent, Obasanjo was a career soldier before serving twice as his nation's head of state, as a military ruler between 1976-1979 and as elected president from1999-2007. He is currently a member of the Council de Madrid, a group of more than 80 former leaders of democratic states who are committed to strengthening democratic leadership and governance. During the Nigerian Civil War, Obasanjo commanded the Army's Third Marine Commando Division that took over the city of Owerri and brought an end to the civil war. Although Ọbasanjọ did not participate in the military coup on July 29, 1975, he supported it and was named a deputy in the new government. Obasanjo was later appointed as head of state by the Supreme Military Council. During Obasanjo’s presidential term, education expanded rapidly and he won international praise for Nigeria’s role in crucial regional peacekeeping missions in Sierra Leone and Liberia. In 1979 he helped bring about the second republican constitution modeled on the constitution of the United States. He prepared the country for local elections and a return to civilian rule. Obasanjo stepped down after the 2007 general elections, becoming the first military head of state to transfer power peacefully to a civilian regime in Nigeria.
