Our nation’s economy was transformed and our quality of life greatly enhanced by an abundance of affordable energy in the last century. Today, America’s energy landscape is complex and increasingly challenged by a world hungry for energy. What is the state of America’s energy security today and what does it look like over the next several decades? Do we have the policies and the resources to become more energy self sufficient? Can energy fuel our economic recovery and keep us competitive in an global economy full of new competitors? Karen Harbert believes energy can be this century’s backbone if we let it. Join the Council to hear Harbert discuss our own energy reality and what we are and are not doing to face it and more importantly, what opportunities lie before us to change our energy future, create jobs and generate investment in our economy. Karen Harbert is the President and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for 21st Century Energy. Harbert leads the Institute’s efforts to build support for meaningful energy action nationally and internationally through policy development, education and advocacy. Under Harbert’s leadership, the Energy Institute has evolved into a premier national and increasingly international organization truly dedicated to advancing a constructive energy agenda and transforming the energy and environmental debate into a widely supported plan of action. At the Institute, she was instrumental in formulating 88 specific policy recommendations that were presented to President Obama and members of the 111th Congress. Harbert frequently testifies in front of Congress and provides analysis to the media, policymakers and industry leaders.
