Ensemble VIII: The House of Tudor—English Polyphony of Tallis, Sheppard, and Byrd
Church of the Incarnation
3966 McKinney Avenue
Dallas, TX 75204

Ticket Price: $20-$45
The concert will feature a cappella masterworks from the English Renaissance. Thomas Tallis’ Lamentations of Jeremiah are perhaps the most famous of all Renaissance settings of this ancient Hebrew poem lamenting the destruction of the city of Jerusalem in 6th century BC. Tallis’ five-voice texture is infused with the undulating emotions of the prophet’s deep sorrow. John Sheppard’s powerful Media Vita begins with the haunting words, “In the midst of life we are in death.” What ensues is one of the most moving and beautiful works of all Tudor polyphony, an architecturally complex composition with varying textures of voicing, including passages of Anglican chant. William Byrd’s monumental collection The Great Service includes impressive, beautiful settings in English of some of the most important liturgical texts of the Anglican Church: Venite, Te Deum, Benedictus, Kyrie, Creed, Magnificat, and Nunc Dimittis.
