The 16th annual Highlander/Wesleyan Jazz Festival will take place Saturday, May 5. The contest was started by the EHHS Band Director, Kathy Bernal, 16 years ago with six bands competing and has now grown to 23 bands and has been highlighted as the “pick of the week” in the Fort Worth Star Telegram for the last four years. It is a partnership with Eastern Hills High School, Tarrant County College South Music Department and Texas Wesleyan University School of Fine and Performing Arts. This year, the event culminates with performances by jazz saxophonist and flutist Bobby Militello. Over the span of his 40 year career, Militello was signed onto Motown Records and has played for and performed with major names such as Dave Brubeck, Maynard Ferguson, Don Menza, Chuck Flores, and many others. In 1991, Militello was contracted to play in the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra where he began playing for Doc Severinson. Bobby Militello has been on over 150 recordings and various television and film scores. During the day, high school music students from across Texas will participate in clinics, workshops, and master classes with outstanding local jazz musicians. In addition to these instructional efforts, the Highlander/Wesleyan Jazz Festival includes performance competitions for all participants. The competition will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Tarrant County College South, and the final concert/awards ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Texas Wesleyan University. Bobby Militello will appear in that culminating evening concert along with jazz ensembles from Texas Wesleyan University and Tarrant County College South, and selected area high school bands, in Martin Hall on the Texas Wesleyan campus. Festival coordinators are Lou Carfa and John Fisher – Texas Wesleyan University; Rick Stitzel – Tarrant County College South; and Kathy Bernal – Eastern Hills High School. Both events are open to the public. For more information, call 817-531-4992. Martin Hall is located in the Ann Waggoner Fine Arts Building at 1309 Wesleyan St., Fort Worth, TX 76105.
