Classical guitarist Katrina Leshan will present Back & Forth: A Classic & Contemporary Guitar Concert at Southern Methodist University’s Caruth Auditorium in the Owen Fine Arts Center on Saturday, April 20 at 2 PM. This recital will feature standard and contemporary works for solo classical guitar, and will showcase the world premiere of Del Despertar, a work written for Leshan by renowned guitar composer Ernesto García de León which was made possible by a Meadows Exploration Grant. Additionally, organist Dr. Larry Palmer and percussionist Kevin Rank will perform duets with Leshan. Admission is free. Originally from Las Vegas, NV, Katrina is in her fourth year at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University, pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance and participating in the University's Honors Program. She works as the Associate Director of the [Untitled] Festival, Dallas's newest contemporary music series. Katrina has given two TED talks, which are viewable on In April 2011, Katrina and her partner took first place in the Brownsville Guitar Competition in the Duo Category. Katrina traveled to Blonay, Switzerland in June 2011 to participate in the Music11 Festival, where she premiered new chamber works with the Grammy Award-winning ensemble eighth blackbird. In July 2012 she traveled to Maccagno, Italy to premiere new chamber works in the soundSCAPE festival's eighth season. In August 2013 she will begin working on her Master of Music degree at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. For more information, visit Dr. Larry Palmer has been on the faculty of the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University since 1970. He is currently professor and head of organ and harpsichord, and university organist. Educated at Oberlin College Conservatory and the Eastman School of Music, Dr. Palmer is internationally known as performer, scholar, and teacher. His biography appears in The New American Grove Dictionary of Music, Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of 20th-Century Classical Musicians, Who’s Who in America, and, since 2009, Who’s Who in the World. Two solo recordings for The Musical Heritage Society and eleven compact discs for Encore Performance/Limited Editions and SoundBoard Recordings comprise his discography. Known for his stylish performances of baroque music, he is also committed to contemporary works: more than 50 new scores for harpsichord, organ, and choir have been written for him. Kevin Rank is a percussionist operating in Dallas. He holds degrees from Southern Methodist University as well as Rutgers University and has been featured as a guest artist and clinician in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. As an educator, he is passionate about cultivating a love for classical music in his students. Selected performances include the premier performance of the SYZYGYsmusic ensemble, WorldFest in Addison, Evenings at the Crow Collection of Asian Art with the Meadows World Music Ensemble and Meadows at the Winspear with the Meadows Symphony Orchestra.
