World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth presents The Great Convergence: Asia, the West, and the Logic of One World
Rosewood Crescent Hotel
400 Crescent Ct.
Dallas, TX 75201

Featuring Kishore Mahbubani. The greatest improvements in human living standards in history have occurred in the last fifty years. They began with the creation of large middle classes in Europe and America. Now Asia is joining in, creating large middle classes. The numbers are staggering. Today, Asia accounts for less than one-quarter of the global middle class. But by 2020, that share could double. More than half the world's middle class could be in Asia. As a result, Asian consumers could account for over 40 percent of global middle class consumption. A large mass of Asian households have incomes today that position them just below the global middle class threshold and so increasingly large numbers of Asians are expected to become middle class in the next ten years. Within a decade, humanity will have created the largest middle class population in human history, one sign of the great convergence that is coming… The world is becoming a more peaceful and prosperous place because a consensual cluster of norms has been sweeping across the world and been accepted by policy-making elites all around the world. One key reason why we are on the verge of creating a single new global civilization from Kigali to Costa Rica, from Santiago to Singapore, from Jakarta to Jeddah, and from New Delhi to Beijing (to name just a few key cities) is that the policymakers in all corners have essentially developed similar sets of perspectives on how to improve and develop their societies.
