The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is based on the book written by Barbara Robinson in 1971. It tells the story of The Herdmans, “the worst kids in the whole history of the world”, who invade the yearly nativity play. Despite protests from other church members, they are given starring roles in the Sunday school's Christmas play, in which they tell the Christmas story in a nonconventional but heartfelt fashion.
