February 10 to May 25, 2008 The Dallas Museum of will host the largest and most comprehensive retrospective ever presented in the United States of the career of J. M. W. TURNER, one of the greatest landscape painters in the history of art, from Sunday, February 10 to Sunday, May 18, 2008 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 1717 North Harowood, Dallas. Joseph Mallord William Turner was born the son of a barber in Covent Garden, London. He worked as an assistant to an architect and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. J. M. W. Turner will consist of approximately 140 works, divided almost evenly between oils and works on paper, and will include masterworks representing his extensive range of subjects—seascapes, topographical views, historical events, mythology, modern life, and scenes from his own fertile imagination. February 16 to June 15, 2008 The Crow Collection of Asian Art is currently exhibiting "The CARU Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles, Part III" from Saturday, February 16, 2008 through Sunday, June 15, 2008 on Tuesdays to Sundays 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 2010 Flora Street, Dallas. This exhibition will showcase masterfully inside-painted snuff bottles by major artists of various schools from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries. With a history tracing back to the Jiaqing reign (1796-1820), this group of bottles represent the zenith of inside-painted snuff bottles development. Each bottle is an impeccable combination of glass making, crystal carving with Chinese ink painting and calligraphy. March 8 to May 22, 2008 Valley House Gallery is pleased to present TRACY HICKS and his installation: GLOBAL WARMING from Saturday, March 8 to Thursday, May 22, 2008 on Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 6616 Spring Valley Road, Dallas. Tracy Hicks’ installation at Valley House Gallery combines art with science vessels to explore the issue of global warming. A key element of Hick’s work lies in the creation and interpretation of collections. His global warming installation resembles a fragile curiosity cabinet creating a luminous environment in the center of the gallery. March 30 to June 22, 2008 The Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University proudly presents "Fernando Gallego and His Workshop: The Altarpiece from Ciudad Rodrigo, Paintings from the Collection of the University of Arizona Art Museum" on exhibit from Sunday, March 30 to Sunday, June 22, 2008 on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursdays fomr 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Sundays from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. at 5900 Bishop Blvd., Southern Methodist University, Dallas. The Meadows Museum, in collaboration with the University of Arizona Museum of Art in Tucson and the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, is organizing an exhibition focusing on 27 of the largest, most beautiful and iconographically ambitious panel paintings made in 15th-century Castile. Each was executed in the last decade of the century in Salamanca in the workshops led by Fernando Gallego (c.1440-1507) and his associate, the painter known as Maestro Bartolome. April 10 to May 25, 2008 The Dallas Handweavers and Spinners Guild will present its biennial juried show, titled "Turn, Turn, Turn, A Time to Spin, a Time to Weave," from Thursday, April 10 to Sunday, May 25, 2008 at the J. Erik Jonsson Library, the main branch of the Dallas Public Library, at 1515 Young Street, Dallas. April 19 to June 22, 2008 The Crow Collection of Asian Art is currently exhibiting "Texas Collects Asia: India and Southeast Asia" from Saturday, April 19, 2008 through Sunday, June 22, 2008 on Tuesdays to Sundays 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 2010 Flora Street, Dallas. This exhibition will feature over sixty works of art from the 12th century onward and explores the vibrant and complicated religious system in Indian and other Southeast Asian countries. May 20, 2008 The World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth will play host to a special premiere of the new HBO film, RECOUNT, the film follows the Florida recount from Election Day in November 2000 through the Supreme Court’s ruling, on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 6:45 p.m. with a discussion by Ben Ginsberg and Mitchell Berger to be held at 8:35 p.m. at Baker Theater, Rosewood Center for Family Arts, 5938 Skillman, Dallas. RECOUNT follows the Florida recount from Election Day in November 2000 through the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of George W. Bush over Al Gore five weeks later. RECOUNT, which stars Kevin Spacey, Ed Begley, Jr., Laura Dern, John Hurt, Denis Leary, Bob Balaban and Tom Wilkinson, pulls back the veil on the headlines and explores the human drama of characters involved in events that would determine the leadership of the country. "My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love" features works ranging from Walker's signature black cut-paper silhouettes to film animations to more than one hundred works on paper. Walker is among the most complex and prolific American artists of her generation. She has gained national and international recognition for her room-size tableaux depicting historical narratives haunted by sexuality, violence, and subjugation through the genteel eighteenth-century art of cut-paper silhouettes. Set in the American South before the Civil War, Walker's compositions play off stereotypes to portray, often grotesquely, life on the plantation, where masters, mistresses, slaves, women, and children enact a subverted version of the past. October 3, 2008 to May 17, 2009 The Dallas Museum of Art presents TUTANKHAMUN AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE PHARAOHS from Tuesday, October 23, 2007 to Saturday, May 17, 2008 on Tuesday and Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 1717 North Harwood, Dallas. Opening on October 3, 2008, at the Dallas Museum of Art, Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs provides insight into the life of Tutankhamun and other royals of the 18th Dynasty (1555–1305 B.C.). All of the treasures in the exhibition are between 3,300 and 3,500 years old. Tutankhamun was one of the last kings of Egypt’s 18th Dynasty and ruled during a crucial, turmoil-filled period of Egyptian history.The boy king died under mysterious circumstances around age 18 or 19, in the ninth year of his reign (1323 B.C.).
