Tyler Street United Methodist Church: Silent Movie with Organ Accompaniment

Tyler Street United Methodist Church Summer Classics Concert Series presents organist Benjamin Kolodziej in a free performance of the silent movie “The Parson’s Widow” on the large four manual, 137-rank organ at the church. This performance recalls the days in the 1920s before the advent of “talkies,” in which the only soundtrack provided for a moving picture came from an orchestra or organ. “The Parson’s Widow” (1920), a comedy/drama from famed Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer, follows the adventures and antics of a young clergyman as he must maneuver through church and personal politics in an effort to secure a coveted position at a church in a small Norwegian village. This entertaining film of about 71 minutes, utlizing much music of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, is not only fun for the whole family, but offers a glimpse of the movie-going experience from the early decades of the 20th century.
