Denton Bach Society: Bach's "Coffee Cantata"
"Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht" (Be still, stop chattering), aka The Coffee Cantata (BWV 211), is one of the few secular vocal works composed by J.S. Bach. Written for Zimmerman's Coffee House in Leipzig between 1732 and 1734, the satirical libretto tells of an addiction to coffee and features lines such as "If I can't drink my bowl of coffee three times daily, then in my torment, I will shrivel up like a piece of roast goat." Vocalists: Heidi Klein, soprano; David Grogan, baritone; Derek Chester, tenor Instrumentalists: Janelle West, flute; Tess Isaac and Stephanie Raby, violins; Andrew Justice, viola; Eric Smith, cello; Lenora McCroskey, harpsichord.
